How to choose the keywords for your next article

I've been writing for Bukisa which is a paid to write site where you can earn money when people view your articles. So the more views you get the more money you can earn.

To get people to view your articles, you can either ask people to look at your articles (social networking) or you can entice the search engine to list your article in their search results page.

The second method would mean that you get people to view your articles without having to ask them to do so. They would search for some information which the search engine deems your articles can provide.

This implies that you need to know what people are looking for and then provide them with the information in your article.

Three Types of Keywords you Need to Know

When an internet surfer goes online to look for information, he will use a keyword or keyword phrase which best describes the information that he needs. From my experience, there are three types of keywords which internet surfers tend to use.

The three types of keywords are

  1. Keywords that are high in demand and highly competitive,
  2. Keywords that are low in demand and also not very competitive, and
  3. Keywords that I think is the goldmine for article writers are those which are high in demand but low in competition.

What do all these mean to you as an article writer?

First Type of Keywords : High Demand, High Competition

The first type of keywords which is high in demand are normally one-word keywords like "loans" (searched 11.1 million times monthly), "insurance" (searched 55.6 million times monthly), "toys" (searched 11.1 million times monthly) and "dating" (searched 16.6 million times monthly).

If you can manage to rank in Google for these keywords, you'll definitely get massive traffic to your articles. But with high demand would also mean high competition.

236 million web pages are targeting the keyword "loans", 651 million web pages are targeting the keyword "insurance", 374 million web pages are targeting the keyword "toys" and 424 million web pages are targeting the keyword "dating".

Besides being too competitive, such keywords are less specific and therefore if you decide to target such a broad keyword, you might not get the traffic that you want anyway.

Second Type of Keywords : Low Demand, Low Competition

The second type of keywords which is low in demand is normally easier to target for beginners. This is because these keywords are less competitive and if you're a beginner, it's easier to get your articles to appear on Google first page.

Seeing your article displayed on Google first page would be a tremendous boost for your morale and you wouldn't feel that your efforts in writing articles is totally for nothing. It is an achievement to see your article on Google's first page especially if it sits in the first position for your chosen keyword.

So if this is your objective then you would be wise to target low demand, low competition keyword. These are keywords which contain more than two words like "personal loans for blacklisted people" which is searched 720 times monthly but there are only 18,900 competing pages. If your article is highly optimized for these keyword phrase, you can easily get to sit in the first position when people are looking for the information.

When I talk about competition, I don't usually just mean the number of web pages that exist but also the quality of the competing pages. So you should also look at each one of the web pages on the first page and see if you can incorporate the information on the pages into your article. Do not copy the information . Give your own perspective. Reword and rewrite and compile all the information. Using this strategy would ensure that your article will get to the first page of Google.

Third Type of Keywords : High Demand, Low Competition

The last type of keyword is the best for article writers who earn from page views. You need to be diligent in looking for this type of keyword. It does exist but you just need to look for them. And you also need to be patient to see your article climb the rankings.

Choose the keywords for your next article wisely and you'll find that your efforts will be worth your while when you see them displayed on Google first page bringing you massive traffic.
